Since I was elected as the President of the Columbus Mortgage Bankers I
have been asked a number of times -- Why should I be a member? I feel that
there are four main reasons:

1) To further educate yourself on your industry.
2) To help educate the consumers on our industry.
3) To give back to the community
4) Network with your peers

The mortgage industry has changed so much in the last few years. To help with our continuing education, our monthly luncheons include a guest speaker who is a professional in some capacity of our industry. In the last few years we have had representatives from the national and state Mortgage Banker’s Association, the Director of Ohio Housing Finance Agency, Representatives from HUD, Richard Cordray, Appraisers, PMI Trainers, The Ohio Attorney General, and Congressman Pat Tiberi just to name a few. Our featured speakers give us an insight that we wouldn’t normally have. You also have the opportunity to talk with them and ask your own questions.

Education of the public has always been a strong focus of CMBA. We have a committee called Money Matters whose sole purpose is to educate young adults. We stress the importance of establishing and maintaining good credit, thereby allowing them to obtain a good financial standing and maintain it all through their lives. This project targets Columbus City Schools at the high school level and works in conjunction with the Columbus Board of Education and "Life Studies" teachers. Our trained association members volunteer their time to teach classes about credit to junior and senior high school students. We can use your expertise in this area to help these young adults get a good start with their financial training.

Giving back to the community is a source of pride for our association. We feel very deeply about Habitat for Humanity. This year we had over 20 people spend a day helping build a home for a person in need. In addition to their time spent, we also have the financial backing of several member companies. I would like to thank Wells Fargo for their generous donation to Habitat this year.

The opportunity to network with other professionals in the mortgage business can help you stay up with the new changes in programs, what your competition has to offer, and what your business partners are experiencing. These partners are not just mortgage originators but Title and Mortgage Insurance account representatives, legal professionals, Realtors and Appraisers.

I highly recommend becoming a member of the Columbus Mortgage Bankers Association. This is a good group of mortgage professionals - people to have as a support system when you have questions or need some help. Give us a try. I guarantee it will be time well spent.
